So far, all my posts have been funny. Not today. This post is a necessity. Mental health in the Hispanic and black community is such a taboo. There’s no such thing as mental health to the elder generation. Because of this, it is so hard to find proper help or even find out what’s wrong in the first place. So, what do we do in this case? Who do we talk to if we can’t talk to our own people because were constantly told “that’s white people shit”? There is so much ignorance when it comes to mental health. “it’s not real” “you’ll be fine” “you don’t have any real problems”. But that’s the thing with mental health, it’s not picky. It doesn’t look at you and say well this person has a home a loving family a great partner lots of money, im not going to affect this one… Nah, rich or poor, big or small, you gettin’ this depression.
We have become a community who feels we already have enough problems. The stuff that we go through in society is too much, nobody wants to add mental health to that. I also feel that our parents believe they worked way too hard to get us where we are for us to say that feeling a negative way is the reason we can’t move forward with certain things.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized the importance of mental health breaks and how crucial they are to maintain your sanity. A mental health break is a break from life. Maybe for a few hours because some of us can’t take a few days for a full vacation. You know those days where you do absolutely nothing all day but feel happiest? That’s a mental health break. The days you go to the city with your best friend and just walk around, that’s a mental health break. Or my favorite, the days when you get high as hell and just chillllllllllll. We tend to deprive ourselves of mental health time because we feel as if we don’t need it, but we do. You don’t have to have a mental disorder to need a mental break. You don’t have to have a crazy busy life to need a mental break. You need a break because you deserve a break. Every now and then our mental health gets tested to some sort of limit it’s not supposed to. Whether it be a super stressful day at work or just a day where everything went wrong, if you need it take it.
The thing with mental health is, because its not talked about, were not taught how to deal with it. The lack of mental health awareness really fucks us up. When you start feeling any “mental symptoms”, they aren’t acknowledged until sometimes its too late. It’s not that we don’t want to talk to anybody, it’s that we’re taught its not something serious enough to talk about. You feel me? It’s a damn shame, but its learned behavior. Luckily, we’re breaking the cycle. We’re talking about it, we’re doing something about it. It just sucks that we can’t talk to the older generation about it. It still doesn’t exist to them. It’s a barrier we might not ever break and were starting to be okay with it (even though that’s not okay, atleast things will be easier for those that come after us, you know, the youth and shit)
This post was supposed to give you ideas on how to take a mental health break, instead I went off because I got angry. So, ill take time now to give you some ideas, sorry yall.
Eat your favorite food– sometimes you can’t go far for a mental health break. So eat what you love. Take yourself to your favorite restaurant or ice cream parlor. Or maybe you can order in and watch a wavy show while you eat a wavy meal
Best friend time– spend time with your best friend. The one person who knows you best and you don’t have to pretend when you’re around them. Walk around the city, get day drunk with straw-ber-itas in ice cups, talk, a lot. Enjoy the company with one of your most favorite people.
Self love day– Face masks. Hair masks. Shave. Bath. Pluck. Mani-pedi. Love yourself. Put on the wavy tunes and just show yourself some good lovin.
Walk walk walk– take a long walk til your legs give out. Make a playlist so you don’t have to take your phone out and just walk. Take the long way. Pick a destination or don’t, that’s up to you. Sometimes not knowing where you’re going makes the walk more fun.
Take yourself on a date- go to the movies, go to a restaurant, go to a museum. Whatever your ideal date is. Take yourself. This one strengthens your mental health. Most of the time, we don’t like to do things by ourselves because we have social anxiety or we are embarrassed, feel like losers, like omg what will people think if they see me by myself but you know what, sometimes waiting on someone to get shit done, it’ll never get done. Party of 1. HELLL YEAHHHHH, and wear a wavy fit while you at it boo.
We can’t change our community as hard as we try. This mental health shit to older generations, just isn’t a thing. We have to look out for ourselves. Fuck it. We are responsible for our own mental health. And I know that we all fear mental disorders and fear having to live with the possibility that something might be wrong and out of our complete control, but that doesn’t mean if you ignore it it will go away. What i’m trying to say is. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health. Mental breaks are just as necessary as drinking water. So don’t feel bad if sometimes you just need a break. IT’S OKAY!!!!! TAKE IT!!!!! I’ve been a mom for 3 months and my god do I need a break every day, sheesh. Nothing tests your mental health like motherhood!!! But the point is, don’t feel bad about it. ultimately what im trying to say in this entire post is… Stop feeling bad about feeling bad.
